THE CHALLENGE 

As part of this project, Multiplex required a safe and efficient way to transport staff from their site shed to the main construction zone. The route needed to traverse over a pedestrian walkway, span a body of water, and navigate around a large tree – all while meeting high standards for safety, stability, and long-term performance. 

The access system also needed to be versatile, with the ability to adapt to changing site conditions over the life of the project. 

THE SOLUTION 

To meet these needs, SuperAccess™ engineered a custom 39-metre bridge supported by a tower structure and stretcher stair. The system was designed to minimise on-site disruption and accommodate existing site constraints. 

In April 2022, we began by pre-installing custom concrete blocks that would support the tower. This early installation allowed the ground to settle gradually, avoiding movement issues that could arise if both the blocks and bridge were installed on the same day. 

The full installation of the modular structure took place over two days in June 2022: 

• Day 1: We installed the support tower, stretcher stair, and the first half of the bridge. 

• Day 2: We installed the bridge section leading to the site offices, which crossed a live pedestrian footpath. 

This split approach was carefully planned to minimise disruption to public walkways by limiting pedestrian detours to short, controlled windows of time. 

ONGOING SUPPORT AND MODIFICATION 

SuperAccess™ has continued to monitor and maintain the bridge since installation, conducting regular inspections and performance checks. 

In March 2025, as the project was near completion, Multiplex requested a reconfiguration of the access system. With works progressing into the original stair zone, a modification was required – but it needed to be completed without impacting the construction schedule. 

To meet this need: 

1. We dismantled one half of the bridge and its original stair connection.

2. We then installed a new set of stairs to connect to an updated walkway.

3. Finally, we removed the stretcher stairs, once uninterrupted access was guaranteed. 

This approach allowed the site team to maintain continuous access, even in the face of unpredictable weather, by ensuring all changes were staged and completed within a single working day. 

THE RESULT 

The SuperAccess™ bridge will remain on site until June 2025, continuing to provide safe, efficient access during the final stages of construction.

A CASE STUDY IN ADAPDABILITY:

Pioneering new standards in versatility

THE CHALLENGE:

A leading construction company required secure, weather-protected access for their team to move safely between worker amenities and the main job site. The area presented unique challenges: a vehicle ramp served as a critical thoroughfare for delivery vehicles accessing the laydown area. The solution needed to provide sufficient overhead clearance for heavy vehicles while ensuring workers could safely navigate the site. 

THE SUPERACCESS™ SOLUTION:

SuperAccess™ engineered a 30m modular bridge to span the delivery ramp, creating a safe and efficient path for workers to enter level 1 of the main structure. The bridge was designed to allow ample clearance for vehicles passing underneath, while stair boxes on either side of the ramp enabled easy access to the laydown area. 

To meet the client’s exact specifications, we provided detailed engineering drawings demonstrating how the solution would work: 

Once approved, our team preassembled the bridge and stair boxes at our yard, enabling installation on-site in just half a day, which significantly reduced downtime. 

CHANGING NEEDS ONSITE:

Midway through the hire period, the temporary bridge needed to be removed to accommodate a new challenge: the assembly of a 650-tonne mobile crane in the laydown area. As the ramp was designated for building the crane’s boom, the bridge needed to be temporarily dismantled and reinstalled afterward. Showing our flexibility and adaptability, we quickly drew up new engineering plans to accommodate their needs:   

The team responded quickly, creating updated engineering plans to meet the client’s changing needs. Thanks to the modular design of our units, the bridge was easily disassembled by three installers in just a few hours and safely stored in a designated area on-site. 

While the stair boxes remained in place, we added temporary edge protection and handrails to ensure workers could continue using the stairs safely. The bridge was removed on a Friday afternoon and reinstalled early Monday morning, in time for the client’s team to resume normal site operations without delays. 

THE RESULT:

This job showcased the adaptability and efficiency of our modular design. The quick removal and reinstallation of the bridge minimised disruption and saved considerable time compared to traditional methods. 

In the remaining six months of the hire period, there will be further modifications to the bridge due to evolving structural design requirements. The bridge will be moved west of its original location, elevated further, and outfitted with additional stair towers and a “dogleg” transition to navigate around an adjoining property.

Project: River Rd Culvert replacement
Location: Leonay, NSW 

THE CHALLENGE

RMA Contracting faced a significant challenge during a culvert replacement project near the intersection of River Road and Buring Avenue in Leonay, NSW. Due to delays outside of the contractor’s control, local residents had been without access to a walkway for many months and were raising concerns. RMA Contracting requested a solution that would allow safe pedestrian access while the critical infrastructure work was underway. 

Our team collaborated closely with RMA Contracting and visited the site before arriving at the final design. We preassembled the bridge at our yard, transporting it in two sections that were then joined on site. Thanks to meticulous planning and coordination, the bridge took only half a day to install, enabling minimal downtime. 

 THE RESULT 

For three months, the temporary bridge ensured that the community could move safely and freely while RMA Contracting carried out the necessary trench work. Residents were pleased with the quick response to their concerns, and RMA Contracting was able to proceed with the culvert replacement without further disruptions. RMA was thrilled with our solution which, in addition to being a safe strategy for pedestrian access, was a more cost-effective strategy than their initial idea of installing a permanent steel bridge.

TEKA 9hr Endurance Racing Round 6: A Weekend to Remember 

SuperAccess™ was proud to sponsor round 6 of The Endurance Karting Association’s (TEKA) 9hr State Title series. The two-day event saw fierce competition as teams pushed the limits of endurance racing. Ultimately, the BMCM Team in kart #29 claimed victory, taking home the coveted Blue Plate and solidifying their place in karting history. 

“The competition was fierce, and the energy on the track was electric,” said Steve Bowden, National Manager of SuperAccess™. “Being a part of this event has been incredible for SuperAccess™ – it’s a thrill to see how much passion there is in the karting community, and we’re proud to support that.” 

The Bathurst 1000: The Great Race 

From the adrenaline-fueled karting track to the legendary mountain roads of Mount Panorama, SuperAccess™ was excited to be part of the action at the 2024 Repco Bathurst 1000. The interested audience included a cohort of 180 VET students actively pursuing opportunities offered by the King’s School to build and expand their trade skills. And there has never been more of a demand for skilled workers, with the Department of Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business projecting the need for an additional 44,000 workers to meet the forecasted 2.4% growth of the construction industry this year.   

In his presentation, Gabe offered key lessons he had learnt from his diverse work experiences. From starting as an apprentice mechanic, to his time as a forklift operator, boat detailer, landscaper, and now Sales & Operations Assistant with SuperAccess™, Gabe reflected that he’d built important skills along the way that were transferrable within the sector: 

“I tried to stress the importance of taking every opportunity you’re presented with when you’re first entering the industry,” said Gabe. “Even if you ultimately discover it’s not the right fit, you’ll have developed skills that will be of use in the next position. From expanding your professional network, to becoming more familiar with the ins and outs of the industry, the experience will end up serving you as you continue your journey.”  

Gabe also encouraged the students not to be afraid of trying new things, that real growth and opportunities can come when we step out of our comfort zone. “I think it’s important to always be open to learning something new, to pivot and explore different roles in a business. You don’t know what opportunities might present themselves as a result,” said Gabe. 

At the presentation’s end, the students were presented with one such opportunity: the possibility of gaining work experience. Students were quick to snap up the opportunity and will spend a week getting an inside perspective on the world of specialised equipment hire.  

“We’re excited to peel back the curtain and provide students with a better understanding of what day-to-day operations are like, and to demonstrate the great versatility and adaptability that can be offered by a career in the construction sector,” said Gabe.

 THE CHALLENGE 

Richard Crookes Constructions needed safe, dry access for their workers from the site shed to the worksite. With a road in between, sufficient overhead clearance for heavy vehicles and stretcher stair access was also required.  

THE SUPERACCESS™ SOLUTION 

SuperAccess™ offered the solution by building a 22m modular bridge that was high enough to enable heavy vehicles to pass below it and stair access from site sheds to the bridge. Drawings were made first to accommodate Richard Crookes’ specific requirements.  

After a few site visits, we arrived at a final design that avoided discovered obstacles:

The SuperAccess™ team then built the stair box and bridge at our yard. Preassembling off-site allowed us to install Richard Crookes’ temporary access solution in a single day.  

THE RESULT 

During the 1.5-year hire period, our modular bridge did not weather or require any maintenance. Inspections were conducted each month to ensure the safety of the structure.  

Richard Crookes was delighted with the reliability of our temporary bridge as our regular checks meant there was no major downtime experienced on site. Our access solution also led to significant cost savings as our client didn’t need to pay for expensive temporary traffic lights or traffic controllers; workers could easily pass above the road to the work site whenever they needed.
